Chandigarh ranks second among UTs in corruption, crime: NCRB data.
Chandigarh – The latest data provided by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of 2016 ranked Chandigarh second among the UT’s in corruption cases, while Delhi ranked first. The NCRB data revealed that a total of 15 cases were registered in 2016 while the number of cases pending from previous year were 22 making the total cases for investigation 37. There were only 4 and 13 cases in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The data further mentions that percentage of cases charge sheeted to the total case investigated is 78.6 pc while 62.2 pc is the pendency rate.In 11 cases charge sheet was filed while at the end of the year, investigation in a total of 23 cases are pending. On the other side, the data further mentions about the court disposals in which a total of 29 cases are for trial. Out of the total trial cases, 18 cases are pending from previous year, 11 cases were sent up for trial during the year while trials in 7 cases were completed. According to the data, 9 persons were arrested in 2016 in offences under Prevention of corruption Act and related sections of IPC. Also a total of 21 persons were charge sheeted during the year while 7 were convicted and 13 persons were acquitted.Chandigarh second among UTs in crime rate, has 26.7 pc violent crime in 2016
The annual data of NCRB for last year has ranked the city second among the seven UT’s in crime rate. Chandigarh among the UTs had 26.7 pc violent crimes, which is the second highest, while Delhi topped with 77.5 pc. The violent crimes include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rape, kidnapping, robbery, dacoity and arson.The number of cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder reported in Chandigarh was six; while Dowry related cases reported in the city were four, again second highest among all the UT’s. According to the data, there were a total of 481 violent crimes in Chandigarh last year. In the section of violent crimes, the city recorded a total of 26 murder cases, 40 cases of attempt to murder, 180 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 68 rape cases, and 54 cases of robbery in 2016.Chandigarh ranked first in recidivism
Maximum percentage where criminals had relapsed into crime after they were convicted The NCRB data ranked city beautiful first in the country for recidivism. In 2015, the city was at number three. Recidivism is a term used for the criminals who relapse into crime after they have been convicted and punished. According to the data, the city’s recidivism percentage was 41.8 last year. The UT police arrested 2,822 persons, of which 1,641 were new offenders, one-time convicted offenders were 1,076, as many as 83 were convicted twice before and 22 were convicted thrice by Chandigarh and other courts. Thus, 1,181 of those arrested by the UT police in 2016 were old criminals.
