Chandigarh: Hoping to encourage cycling among city residents, Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporation (CITCO) had roll out bicycle on rent concept. Cycling lovers can avail the facility at Sukhna Lake at present.
The concept entails a public bicycle system or bike rental scheme, wherein bicycles are made available on rent use to individuals on a short-term basis at a very lost cost, allowing the same bicycle to be used by several users a day. One can get cycle at rent of Rs 200 per day and refundable security of Rs 2,000.
The system, which is quite prevalent in several European countries and China, allows people to rent a bicycle and return it at same point after cycling down across the city. With this, people can opt for cycling when travelling distances inside the city instead of taking motorised public transport or private vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution.
CITCO Chief General Manager Navjot Kaur said, “We have started the bicycle rent concept at Sukhna Lake. The idea is to promote cycling in city and by paying Rs 200 per day rent one can avail the services. People can go around the city or can also take a cycle ride in the Nature trail in Sukhna Wild Life Sanctuary. At present we have got 10 cycles parked under fibre shed at Sukhna Lake.”
Few years ago also, the concept was introduced at Sukhna Lake but there were no takers and ultimately cycles worn out and perished. But now, said Navjot Kaur CITCO has made proper enclosure to save the cycles from rain and sun.
UT Administration itself has been doing efforts to promote cycling concept in city for which a new cycle track is being constructed along the Himalaya Marg exclusively for cycles. Some more cycle tracks to be constructed along the main roads are also under pipeline.
