Chandigarh: Around 10 previous lives are lost in fatal accidents every month in Chandigarh. In October itself, 14 people were killed in separate road mishaps in City.
In the year 2016, 110 accidents have taken place so far in Chandigarh and in most of the accidents, two wheeler riders are the victims, depicts data.
According to an official of Chandigarh Traffic Police, in the year 2015, till October 89 people lost their lives in the 330 road accidents that took place in city.
The data reveals that among the 89 fatal accidents, 36 victim were riding two wheelers and among these, 28 were male and 8 were female.
Following this, pedestrians have been the most unsafe on city roads, as 33 have been killed by the rashly driven vehicles. Among these, 21 were male and 12 were female pedestrians.
Cyclists have been reported unsafe on city roads, as 12 have been killed so far till October.
Even though the actual number of road accidents in the city per year has reduced in the last five years, the percentage of fatal accidents has increased.
The number of accidents has been consistently decreasing; 456 accidents took place in 2010, 437 in 2011, 419 in 2012, 410 in 2013, 369 in 2014. In contrast the percentage of casualties has been increasing. As many as 28 per cent of accidents were fatal in 2010, 29 per cent in 2011, 31 per cent in 2012, 28 per cent in 2013 and 33 per cent in 2014.
Most of the accidents were reported from Madhya Marg, Transport Area traffic light point, the Railway Station traffic light point and the Housing Board traffic light point, PGI/PU crossing, airport light point and Dakshin marg which have a heavy inflow of traffic and connect commuters to Panchkula, Zirakpur and Mohali.
