Chandigarh:Following the rise in the number of accidents, city roads are turning into killer zones with two accidents taking place daily and a person dying every third day. According to police data, fatal accidents have shot up from 85 in 2013 to 126 in 2016, a rise of 48 per cent.
According to the Chandigarh Police Black Book, the persons who lost their lives in these fatal accidents are mostly two-wheeler riders. A majority of accidents has occurred at the city’s dark spots that are Transport Chowk, Hallomajra and Dectors 45/46/49/50 light points as identified by the police in a survey.
Traffic experts cited rash driving, drunken driving and use of cell phones as the key reasons. Road safety researcher and a traffic marshal in Chandigarh Police, Dr Guneet Singh, said,”There has been a big rise in people using phones while driving and I am sure it’s causing too many accidents.’’
