Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress remembered former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary on Monday. Former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and president of the Chandigarh Congress Pardeep Chhabra were among the prominent persons who paid tributes to the former Prime Minister. Besides, many other senior party leaders were also present at the meeting held at Chandigarh Congress Bhavan in this regard.
While speaking on the occasion, Bansal said that Indira Gandhi was still alive in the hearts of poor people across the country. He accused the Union government of making the efforts to erase the names of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi from the minds of the people but they would not succeed in their efforts.
He lauded the contribution of the charismatic and epoch-making personality of Indira Gandhi who left her imprint not only in the affairs of a country but also in international affairs.
UT Congress chief Chhabra said that Indira Gandhi always thought of upliftment of poor, SC, ST, BC and minority communities in the country. He said that the Congress would continue to follow the principles laid down by Gandhi for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. “Indira will be remembered for her commendable efforts in the development of the country as well as policies like the nationalisation of banks and the 20-points programme. He said that she had brought and implemented several social security, economic and land reforms for the poor people.
“An increase in India’s economic and military strength during her regime made India an important power which none of the superpowers could afford to ignore,” said Chhabra. All party councillors, office bearers, presidents of the Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, Sewa Dal and chairmen of all the cells of the Congress were present on this occasion.
