Parking vehicle at railway station parking turns out to be the costliest throughout city. One has to pay Rs 20 to 30 for four wheelers and Rs 10 for two wheelers as a fixed parking fee. Despite high parking rates, contractor running the parking lot is demanding hike in parking charges. Railways have outsourced parking contract for Rs seven lakh per annum which comes directly under jurisdiction of DRM Commercials, northern railways.
However, parking contractor is often found fleecing general public and charges Rs 20 for two wheelers instead of Rs 10. As compared to other public parking’s in city, the prevailing rate for cars is Rs 5 whereas in malls the prevailing rate between Rs 20 and Rs 40 depending upon time duration. On the contrary parking four wheeler costs Rs 30 for single entry and shoots up to Rs 40 for 24 hours parking. Public has been complaining about the contractor for indulging in overcharging and collecting Rs 30 for car and Rs 20 for two wheelers.DRM Commercials, Parveen Gaur Dewedi said, “We will look into the matter at the earliest.”
Parking contractor quipped , “We have paid Rs seven lakh to railways for contract but we are not reaching breakeven point. We are not earning Rs 3,500 per day. So we have requested railways to hike the parking fee to Rs 40 per car. We are getting just 150 vehicles at parking lot on daily basis.”Previous contractor was fined for overcharging by railways after which the latter took possession of the 24-hours parking lot. Railway officials at the Chandigarh railway station had prepared the report on the basis of managing parking themselves and generated a revenue averaging Rs 7,500 per day. The report highlighted that around 1600 vehicles are parked in a single day at parking lot
