Chandigarh: A day after the news about MC lifts conked off appeared in Daily Post, the Municipal Corporation swung into action and initiated the work to drain out the water from the lifts of the multilevel parking on Wednesday. The labour working in the third basement of the parking said that still there was eight-foot deep water that needed to be drained out from the roots of the multilevel parking.
There are four lifts with two pairs each to transport people to the surface of the multilevel parking from the three basements. The lifts conked off due to water-logging at the third basement as the water overflowed from the fire water storage tank.
MC Chief Engineer N P Sharma said, “I was surprised to learn that the lifts were water-logged and these had stopped working. The staff were pulled up for the negligence and the work to drain out the water has been initiated. It may take two days after which we will test the working of the lifts before opening them for public use.”
Labour was seen draining out water manually using the tin bins with the help of a rope from around 10-foot deep ditch at the roots of the lift.
The MC does not have heavy duty pumps to drain out the water. The ambitious project of Municipal Corporation (MC), the first multilevel parking of the city, has been in news since its inception. The parking is already facing the survival crunch due to minimal parking occupancy. Recently the contractor had also ceased the operations and MC took over the charge of the parking.
