Chandigarh : A large number of parents still fail to accept that their child is suffering has some specific Learning Disability and assessment go unnoticed until high school, which is a major issue concern, shared Kate Currawala of ‘Tare Zameen Pe’ fame and known to promote the rights of people with dyslexia and learning disabilities.
In an exclusive interaction with Daily Post, Kate shared, “Seeing the current phenomena, because of lack of awareness almost 20 percent of children in India are suffering from learning disability known as ‘ Hidden Handicap’ generally not showing any signs of disability but are termed as destructive, hyperactive , indifferent , lazy and unorganized. “Not only this, these students can study in normal schools and can improve through remediation significantly but unfortunately due to lack of infrastructure and expertise these students are forced to study in special schools with children facing higher challenges of mental retardation, ”she added. While on Tuesday Currawala visited at St Kabir to brief about the national level conference which is being organized in association with Empower Ode on 23 November 2016. The national level conference will deliberate on topics like visual perceptions, a need of educating the key stakeholders like schools , principals and parents, and the importance of resource room working through dyslexia therapist, alternative educational methods etc.
