Chandigarh:Panchkula: Residents were taken by surprise after dust storm followed by rain hit tri-city on Friday evening. Heavy winds with speed of 48 knots uprooted many trees and branches. However, 5 ml of rainfall was recorded at MeT observatory. The dust storm and rain triggered major power failure in tri-city for hours. Traffic jams were also seen at many inter sections in city. Major power failure was reported from many parts of Chandigarh and Panchkula after the tri-city was lashed by dust storm and rain. The residents were without power for over five hours. The most affected Sectors were Sector 16, 18, 21, 22, 34, 35 in Chandigarh where the power went off at around 7 pm. Junior Engineer, Palwinder Singh posted with Sector 19 electricity office said that the phone started ringing regularly as the power was snapped due to technical snag following the dust storm. Similarly, the Panchkula residents also faced tough time due to power failure. Sectors 12, 12-A, 15, 16, 18, MDC Sector 4, 5 witnessed power failure for hours. Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) Executive Engineer ,Rajesh Chauhan said that due to dust storm power cables had snapped because of which the supply was stopped.
