Model code of conduct to come in to force
Chandigarh: The model code of conduct will be enforced on Tuesday with declaration of the date of general election to Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh. Rakesh Mehta, State Election Commissioner, UT, Chandigarh will declare the date of elections at 11:15 am at UT guest house.
Sources in UT Administration have told that MC elections are likely to be held on December 18 and November 22 to 28 will be the dates for filling the nomination papers. November 30 will be the date of withdrawals of nominations said sources.
MC goes for elections as the house will be dissolved with the declaration of the model code of conduct. MC elections are conducted after a gap of five years to elect 26 councillors and nine nominated councillors.
The nominated councillors will be declared by December 28 and the new Mayor will be elected in first week of January.
The forthcoming Municipal Corporation (MC) elections will be held as per the Delhi Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 2007 instead of The West Bengal Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1976 act norms, said Rakesh Mahta.
Draw of lots for the reservation of the wards was held recently in which the Congress party is the most affected with the declaration of the ward reservation policy by Election Commission. Seven sitting Congress councillors have been uprooted in the reservation. Three councillors of BJP and one each of SAD and BSP have been overblown.
There are two SC women reserved wards out of a total of five wards reserved for women and three wards reserved for SC (general) candidate.
