Chandigarh: The award of Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences has been bestowed on five professors of PGIMER, including Prof S K Gupta, Head Department of Neurosurgery, Professor S V Rana of Gastroenterology, Professor Sanjeev Handa, Head Department of Dermatology and Professor Ajay Duseja, Department of Hepatology have been honoured with the award. Awards shall be conferred at the 56th Annual Conference of NAMS to be held at AIIMS, Raipur in October. Prof. S K Gupta a senior Neurosurgeon has close to 150 publications and chapters in national and international journals and has special interest in Skull Base, Micro Vascular and Epilepsy Surgery.
Professor SV Rana has been working in the area of gastrointestinal clinical biochemistry and nutrition; has worked on effect of malnutrition on gastrointestinal tract and nervous system, oxidative stress, mechanism of isoniazid & rifampicin hepatotoxicity and its prevention by using N-acetylcysteine, garlic & carotenoids, molecular aspects & prevention of colon cancer using wheatgrass and zinc and malabsorption in diabetic patients.
Dr Sanjeev Handa who is a member of several international societies has also been bestowed previously with the Fellowship of the American Academy of Dermatology and Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh). He has several other awards to his credit notably the ICMR Lala Ram Chand Kandhari Award and the Prof LK Bhutani award of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists.
Prof. Ashima Goyal has a passion for Community Oral health services in children particularly the prevention of ‘Early childhood caries. As a researcher she has exclusively worked on fluorides and oral health, preventive dentistry, conscious and deep sedation, children with special health care needs, aesthetic dentistry in children and molar incisor hypomineralization and guided 45 postgraduate research dissertations. She has got 115 scientific publications, 1 book, 14 manuals and 8 invited chapters to her credit with a total of 800 citations. Recognizing her passion towards community oral care she was honored with International award at the IAPD congress, Glasgow and Life Time Achievement award by “Venus International Foundation.
Dr Ajay Duseja for last 20 years is working as Faculty with focused research in the field of Hepatology. He is Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and Fellow of the Society of GI Endoscopy of India (FSGEI). He is member of Indian National Association for the Study of Liver (INASL) Task Force on Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Hepatitis C virus, Hepatocellular carcinoma, Acute Chronic Liver Failure and Drug Induced Liver Injury. He is author of more than 175 papers in reputed international and national journals and has contributed several chapters in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology text books.
