Chandigarh: Chandigarh Police figures yet again show that the city is unsafe for women. Data of 10 months of 2016 shows that five rapes and eight molestation cases are reported every month in the city. Thepolice, however, claim to have solved almost 90 per cent of the cases. According to a recent compilation of data by Chandigarh Police, 56 rapes and 79 molestation cases have been registered till date.
According to an official data of Chandigarh Police, 78 rapes and 102 molestation and obscene act cases were registered in 2015 while 64 rapes and 101 molestation and obscene act cases were registered in 2014. Shockingly among those, 32 victims were minor girls while other 33 were major. Among the 87 molestation cases registered in 2014, 17 victim girls were minor whereas 60 were major.
The data reveals that in 2016, among the victims of rape, around two dozens were minor. In the 93 molestation cases registered, around a dozen girls were minor.
In September, a 22-year-old youth was arrested after a19-year-old girl wasfound pregnant after she was raped by him at Mauli Jagran, Chandigarh. In August, the Chandigarh Police arrested a 23-year-old B.A final year student for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl on the pretext of getting married.
Among the molestation cases, in August, the Chandigarh Police arrested an auto driver for allegedly molesting an Egyptian girl. The accused identified as Nannu (34), a resident of Shastri Nagar, Manimajra, was following her from Elante Mall.The auto driver tried to molest her and assault her but some of the youths saw the auto on the road and they came to her rescue.
Meanwhile, among the cases of sexual harassment, eleven cases have also been registered so far in Chandigarh.
