LALRU: Struggling with problem after demonetisation, a gen set placed before a bank, claimed the life of a 57-year-old women who had came to exchange Rs 6000 from the branch of State Bank of Patiala in Handesra on Tuesday morning.
Deceased’s shawl got entangled in wheel of gen set, following which she got strangled. The money was needed for wedding of her niece, scheduled on November 23. Though it was her second consecutive visit but the amount was not exchanged even after her death and banned currency notes and filled form were left with her. Handesra police have registered a case under section 304 A of IPC against bank employees.
Incident took place around 10:45 am. The open gen set without cabin cover was placed in front of bank where people were standing in que. Roshni Devi, wife of Gurmail Singh, a resident of Bartana village near Lalru, came with her son Devichand. Chand said wedding of his cousin Usha Devi and Lakhwinder Singh, was scheduled on November 23.
Though his mother also visited on Monday and waited for a long time but due to incomplete filled form, she could failed to exchange money. Chand said mother was moving towards queue when her shawl got entangled in the wheel of gen set, placed near the gate.
Within few seconds, she got dragged near the wheel and got strangulated. People in queue raised alarm, following gen set was turned off. She was rushed to civil hospital in Ambala city where doctors declared her brought dead.
Her family is survived by two sons and a daughter besides her husband. ASI Hansraj said the body was cremated in the village amid grief stricken atmosphere after post-mortem. He said police have started investigation after registering a case against the bank employees for sheer negligence, leading to death of Roshni Devi.
It has to be mentioned here unauthorized gen sets had been banned by National Green Tribunal from May,2013 and notices were served to its users under prevention of green tribunal act and section 21 of prevention of air pollution control act, 1981. Surprisingly, the said nationalized bank had been using the banned gen set in open from last three years.
