Chandigarh: There is little doubt that the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, is among the top government hospitals in the region. However, there is still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to stretcher trolleys and wheelchairs.
The hospital doesn’t have any wheelchair available at the main entrance (on either side of the block where patients arrive), the provision of which is the basic responsibility of the hospital authorities towards patients.
Rinku, a resident of Zirakpur, who had brought his 70-year-old mother to the hospital, said, “Lack of wheelchairs is causing a lot of difficultly to the patients. On my recent visit to the hospital, I looked around for wheelchair everywhere but could not find any.
It’s the same situation every time we visit the hospital. Sometimes my mother has to wait for up to 45 minutes or longer for a wheelchair. She even missed her appointment while waiting for wheelchair.”
“They don’t even have enough stretcher trolleys and the ones they have, are too narrow and high. Being overweight, I can’t be lifted to the stretcher, nor can I lie on my back, so you can imagine my plight,” said his mother who is a cancer survivor.
A security guard, who did not wish to be identified, agreed. “It’s nothing new. It’s always like this. I’ve seen patients face an unsavoury situation during times of emergency treatment; some become so frustrated that they even steal wheelchairs from other patients in the wards. Just looking around the hospital, you can see that patients are suffering, but sadly, there has been no improvement in the situation,” he shared.
One patient insisted that he had brought the issue to the notice of hospital management, but, apparently, no action has been taken by the authorities.
Atul Sachdeva, director GMCH-32 on the issue said: ‘’Everyday hospital sees a footfall of hundred of patients and because of that sometimes the availability of wheelchairs and trolleys are not there but on our part, we always try to match up to the shortage.
Every year the management purchases the same to make sure that patients do not suffer. Also following this, we are in process of buying new wheelchairs and trolleys this month.’’
