Chandigarh: The E-Rickshaws provided free by Municipal Corporation (MC) to facilitate those parking their vehicles at Multi-level parking in Sector 17 Chandigarh failed to serve purpose as there are hardly any takers for the facility. MC had passed on the facility free of cost for those parking their vehicles at Multi-Level parking. MC blames the poor footfall at the parking lot for which there are very less takers for the e-rickshaws. The facility was mooted with a view to provide free ride for those who seek to park their vehicle at multilevel parking and have to reach to the far end of the Sector 17 plaza.
The e-rickshaw operator said that he only gets a single to two chances a day on weekdays to ferry passengers from multilevel parking to other parts of the plaza. But on weekends, he said that he usage increases. Mayor Arun Sood said, “The two surface parking lots were closed in wake to promote the occupancy at the multilevel parking but since those two parking lots have been re-opened, the occupancy at multi-level parking dropped substantially. This may be the reason for poor takers for the e-rickshaws.” With the re-opening of the two surface parking lots, Municipal Corporation directed the traders to park their vehicle in the new multilevel parking lot in Sector 17, the average parking number failed to cross even 50 per cent of the occupancy mark.
The two floors of the four storied parking lot remained empty since its inception. Multi-level parking has a capacity of 932 vehicles at all the floors. The Municipal Corporation has recorded that on average parking occupancy has fallen with the opening of the two closed surface parking lots, Sahib Singh and Empire Stores. “Where the occupancy number had risen to 650 vehicles per day at the parking, it has fallen down to 400 and 500 right from the day after the parking’s were reopened,” said Mayor Arun Sood.
MC has also issued parking passes at monthly basis against payment of Rs 700 for four wheelers and Rs 250 for two wheelers for traders, employees and general public. Mayor said, “The success of the multi-level parking highly depends upon the occupancy and if the other surface parkings will remain open, the success rate will not climb up.” In the multi-level parking, a car owner is charged Rs 5 for first four hours and Rs 10 up to five hours and Rs 5 is charged for every additional hour after five hours. So the traders will have to pay Rs 5 for additional five hours if their vehicles are without stickers because they have to be in the Sector till late in the night.
