Panchkula: ‘’Despite a staff crunch, we have been able to keep a tab on crime,” says Panchkula Commissioner of Police Dr R.C. Mishra, but the year 2017 has, however, shown the other side of the statement as the year commenced with major crime cases, thus disturbing the law and order situation.
The city has witnessed a horrific start in 2017 with murder and rape cases. Twenty-eight days into 2017 and five rape cases have been reported, thus putting women safety at stake.
However, it is learnt that the Panchkula police have worked on several cases of murder and rape. Moreover, it have kept a strict vigil on narcotics cases in 2016, but the department has so far failed to crack the January 17 rape-at-gunpoint case.
In a blatant display of lawlessness that underlined a tough job for the police, a 21-year-old engineering student was abducted from the Sector 20 market and then raped at some secluded place in Sector 27 in the city on January 17 night. As many as five rape cases have been registered in these four weeks of January.
Dr Mishra, said, “Women are safe in Panchkula. We have 25 PCRs, 29 motorcycle riders and 11 checkposts across the city to ensure safety round the clock. A network of CCTV cameras is also there. The whole Commissionerate is under surveillance, including all entry and exit points in the city. There were five rape cases and of these four have been solved. We are working hard to crack the January 18 rape case.”
He added, “The criminal has gone alert and is lying low. It is not a case of poor law and order. In the rape of 21-year-old girl, we have got clues and would soon crack the case.’’
Even the National Commission for Women had taken notice of this case and has been seeking a daily report from the Panchkula police on the crime. On January 25, the police released a sketch of the accused, but no further headway has been made yet.
