Chandigarh/Panchkula/Mohali: It was dark Diwali for some as a total of 48 fire incidents were reported from the tricity on the night of Diwali. A house in Sector 21, car in Sector 37 and kitchenware shop in Dadu Majra were gutted in the major fire incidents.
Preet Singh, a resident of Sector 21, was away to Rajpura with his family to celebrate Diwali with relatives when one of his neighbours witnessed flames emerging from the back yard of the house. He called up the fire brigade which reached the spot within 10 minutes at 7.47 pm. It took over just one hour for the fire fighters to douse the fire and by 9 pm the fire was brought under control. Fire officer said that a suspected cracker must be the cause of fire.
Preet said, “We have lost four LCD’s, six AC’s and other house hold items worth Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh in fire. Four rooms have been completely gutted. We were away to Rajpura when our neighbour called up and informed about the fire.”
In another incident, Sonu Gas Store in Dadu Majra colony was also gutted. The owner of the shop, Kamlesh Kumar said that his plastic goods worth Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 have been lost in fire. The fire tenders rushed to the spot at around 7.43 pm and took 15 minutes to douse the fire. The cause of fire is unknown, said firemen.
Fire officer said that a passer-by made a call informing about the fire but till the firemen doused the fire, no one came forward to own the car. The fire was controlled within 10 minutes. However, the other incidents reported were of minor fire incidents across the city on the night of Diwali, he said.
