When asked about what is the value of Independence Day for them, they said “We don’t know if Independence Day has any value for us in our life but yes selling these plastic flags will give us some money to eat good food at least for a week”, said Naina, a woman selling flags on city roads.
Another 14-year-old boy, Vishal who was seen standing on Tribune light point for the whole day said “Since the day I am standing here with other boys to sell these flags as the people will buy it only for today and tomorrow and not after that. I wish to sell as many of these flags today and tomorrow so that I can earn some margin money from it.” Independence Day for me is just another day as I have no rejoice with it but to sell these flags and earn money so that I don’t have to sit idle or without work seeking alms, said Vishal, while stopping a car for selling the flags.
Sarita, another woman at Hallomajra light point said “traffic light points are the places where people stop and we have time to show them what we have got for them to sell. In a minute, they make up their min and buy the flags. Some even buy the flags in bulk which give us a bit joy but nothing to feel great about Independence Day”, she added.
