Chandigarh: The CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology at Sector 39-A, Chandigarh, is currently hosting the International Symposium “Microbial Resource Centers and Conservation of Microbial Diversity” and the 13th meeting of the “Asian Consortium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial Resources (ACM)”.
The three-day meeting is being organized by the Microbial Type Culture Collection and Gene Bank (MTCC) at CSIR-IMTECH, and the scientific program covers a wide range of topics related to microbial diversity, conservation, and applications in industry.
The symposium has brought together 150 participants from different ACM member countries, including Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea and various research institutes of India.
Welcome addresses by Prof. R. K. Sinha, Director, CSIR-IMTECH, YasuoKii, Director-General, NBRC, Japan, and an emotional address by Dr. Prasad, Head, MTCC, CSIR-IMTECH and organizing secretary of the symposium, who is incidentally also completing 25 years at CSIR-IMTECH this year, the symposium was formally inaugurated at the CSIR-IMTECH auditorium this morning by Dr. Meena Kumari, Chairperson, National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) of India.
Dr. MeenaKumari graciously explained the existing biodiversity laws and the legal framework of the NBA, and promised to do her best to ease research and collaborations with respect to research on microbial diversity.
Dr Srikrishna Subramanian, Principal Scientist at CSIR-IMTECH and the brain behind the unique and tastefullydesigned symposium souvenir book cover (rendered by artist Leena Swamy, Kaleidostrokes, Bangalore), explained its concept “The microscope together with culture techniques revealed a whole new world of microbes, hitherto hidden to the human eye.
New technologies such as next generation sequencing technologies are currently complementing existing culture dependent techniques, adding a new dimension and furthering our knowledge of microbial diversity.”
