Chandigarh: Tables have turned against Congress as Election Commission has decided to get MC elections conducted on 2011 census. Now, first five wards having maximum percentage of SC, ST population will be reserved.
Congress gets major blow as wards of former Mayor Subhash Chawla, Sat Parkash Aggarwal, Darshan Garg and Poonam Sharma are falling under list of reserved category. Subhash Chawla contests from Ward number 5, Sat Parkash Aggarwal from ward number 6, Poonam Sharma from ward number 7 and Darshan Garg from ward number 11.
Fifth is ward number 23 falling in reserved category that belongs to BSP councilor, Jannat Jahan-ul-Haque.
State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta in a communiqué to Secretary Local Bodies UT has informed that the MC elections must be conducted as per the 2011 census this year. Earlier the MC elections were conducted as per the 2001 census.
Confirming the same, State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta said, “Yes we have sent a letter to Secretary Local Bodies UT informing them that the election will be conducted for 26 wards and as per the 2011 census. The first five wards having maximum population of SC/ST will be reserved this year.”
According to the list, ward number 6, of Sat Parkash aggarwal tops the list with 72.4 pc reserved voters followed by ward number 5 of Subhash Chawla with 60.8 pc of reserved category voters. The third number is of ward number 23 of Jannat Jahan-ul-Haque with42.2 pc reserved category voters, then comes ward number 11, of Darshan Garg with 42.2 pc reserved category voters and the fifth ward in of Poonam Sharma, ward number 7 with 38.9 pc reserved category voters.
Earlier, speculation were being made that wards of BJP fielded councillors will be next in fray for the reserved category which included ward of sitting Mayor Arun Sood.
