Chandigarh: “Making City beautiful child-friendly is my top priority and I will make sure that every strata of society should be aware of the child issues and help in providing a healthy environment for every child,” said newly elected Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) Chairperson Harjinder Kaur.
In an exclusive interview with Daily Post, former Mayor of the Municipal Corporation Harjinder Kaur said, “Getting selected as the commission’s new Chairperson is just like coming back home for her as for the past 20 years she had been closely associated with social work, especially for women and child empowerment in the city.”
“I am really thankful to every person who showed trust in me and bringing me back to the field which is really close to my heart and I will try my best for bringing back the children who are deprived of their education and many other facilities which are their right.”
Answering as to what would be her top most agendas soon after joining the office, Kaur said, “It would be too early to comment on this, I have to work as the team with the commission members. I have to discuss with every member of the commission as for where are we lacking and what better we can do to make sure the energy of every child (be a school going or dropout) is channelised in the right direction.”
Commenting on the rising graph of juvenile crimes, she said,”Today, certainly juvenile crime is on the rise but we need to understand how to utilise every child’s energy and that can be done only if we introduce skill development works programmes for the very child.”
“And for this, I would be approaching a number of intellectuals and experts living in City Beautiful as by involving them and working along with their suggestions, we can certainly bring in the much-needed revolution and setting a benchmark for not only society but for the commission too,” added Kaur.
Follow-up system is lacking
Commenting on the follow-up system, which presently is missing every time a case is reported to the commission, Kaur said,”Practical programmes are needed for the channelisation of any case related to the child. Once the programme is initiated, then one needs to go in for action and follow-up plan. With this, an alternate programme for every case is needed followed by close and regular monitoring which needs a support system. I will be looking for administrative support system. Also, previous knowledge testing is needed for the changes required.
In politics it didn’t see any growth
During my term in politics, I did not have any growth so when I saw an advertisement regarding the position vacant in the commission, I immediately decided to apply and shift to the area of my interest. Mission with passion is all that we need in politics or any other field. My commitment was always social. Today we cannot call every child a lucky child in the city. We need to start the concept of ownership society to make a healthy environment for each child.
