Chandigarh:The Municipal Corporation admitted that the water pond where two year old infant girl had died due to drowning was not a part of original design at Dinosaur Park. The confession came during the MC house meet held on Tuesday.
The MC Engineering Department said this while reasoning the questions raised by councillors over the tragic issue. House observed two minutes silence to commemorate the tragic incident. Starting the war of words, Hira Negi, area councillor said that it is the third such incident in her ward and since 2012, MC failed to fill the pond making the water body prone to deaths. She said, “It was on 2012, when a youth had died of drowning in the same pond and in 2015, another youth had a close shave and now an infant died of drowning. If MC would have acted in a responsible manner, the tragic incident could have been averted.”
Seconding the concern, BJP councillor Devesh Mudgal said that he demands the proper probe into the matter and if any of the MC officials is found negligent then suitable action may be initiated.Congress, Councillor Gurbax Rawat also seconded the concern and said, “Most of water bodies and fountains are crying for attention. All such water bodies must be converted into parks.” The councillors also suggested for suitable compensation for the affected family as it was done during the previous incidents.
Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal, said that she has marked an enquiry into the incident to find out the negligence on the part of the officials. Mayor has ordered the MC officials to prepare a report on the other such existing water bodies in city to ensure them to be safer for residents.
