Chandigarh: With a view to attaining the Open Defecation Free status of the city, Municipal Corporation (MC) is in process to install marathon toilets in various ODF prone areas. The MC has targeted to declare Chandigarh ODF city buy October 2.It has installed 160 new toilets en-route to attain ODF status and has also set up 15 mobile toilet vans with a capacity of 150 seats, with each mobile toilet having five seats for women and five for men.
MC Joint Commissioner Manoj Khatri said, “MC has set up 160 new toilets at various ODF-prone areas and is all set to provide 500 such toilets for the people prone to defecate in the open. The MC has already made 326 defunct toilets functional in tin colony in Sector 52 and is in process of clearing the remaining 700 odd toilets. The new sewerage line has been laid in the Sector to clear the blockage, and 15 teams have been constituted with ODF marshals to educate and spread awareness amongst those prone to defecate in open. Target is to declare Chandigarh ODF city by October 2.”
He also said that 16 wards have already been declared ODF and remaining 10 wards councillors have already submitted their declaration of being ODF free wards. “The agenda to declare the remaining wards as ODF free will be brought up for approval in the next house meet slated for September 28. MC has already put up the ODF free wards status on website as public notice seeking objections from public, if any,” said Khatri.
As per the MC reports, over 25,000 people defecate in the open in Chandigarh city and under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, city is poised to be declared ODF free city.
MC gets best urban local body award
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has been selected for Best Urban Local Body Award for achievements of first paperless digital survey of street vendors and completion of digital survey in record time of 1.5 months to implement city street vending plan under the street vendors (protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending) Act 2014.
The award will be presented at the national level seminar by “All India Business Development Association” (AIBDA) on “Outstanding Contribution to National Economic and Social Development” in New Delhi.
On September 24 2016, the seminar will be inaugurated and presided over by Union Minister, Governors, Ambassadors and other prominent national leaders. Leading industrialists, corporate directors’ professionals and business leaders will be participating in this seminar.
