Chandigarh:Municipal Corporation (MC) with a view to dissuade habitual parking defaulters from parking their vehicles on roads and berms had initiated challan drive. On the very first day MC failed to deter commuters for wrong parking at Sector 17.
The drive was initiated in co-ordination with State Transport Authority (STA) and UT Traffic Police. STA challaned eight vehicles and UT traffic police challaned 12 vehicles whereas MC Enforcement Department could challan only two vehicles.Mayor Arun Sood said, “Our purpose is not to penalise people but to persuade them to use multilevel parking for parking vehicles. The drive is also to discourage people from parking on roads and berms.”
The entire exercise is to create awareness among the people about using multilevel parking and encourage them to use it on regular basis,” added Mayor.It was observed that just 50 meters away from multilevel parking, vehicles were seen parked on road opposite RBI building and in Post Office square.
