Chandigarh: The season’s first rainfall has exposed the workmanship at the newly-built multi-level parking lot as it has multiple leaks. The level one of the parking leaks from seven places. Municipal Corporation officials say that it is not a big issue and can be cured. The pre-monsoon showers have exposed the chinks in the architecture of the multi-level parking constructed at the cost of Rs 49 crore.
The ambitious project of the MC which is already running low for occupancy has developed new problem of leaking water from the roof of the level 1. During a reality check by Daily Post, it was discovered that the seven leaking points at level 1 of the multi-level parking were A-16, A-17, A-21, A-55, A-70, A-79 and on the wall of the main entry point. However, MC officials termed the anomaly as ‘not a big issue which can be repaired easily.’
Mayor Arun Sood said, “It’s not exactly seepage in the multi-level parking due to architectural faults but it is due to opening on sides from where the water seeps in, travels and flows out from another opening. There is no fault in multi-level parking and just the hype is created.” The architects are, however, of other view and said that it is porousity left in the concrete due to air bubbles during the laying of the concrete structures. “During lying of the concrete structures, air bubbles are generally left in the concrete which later turn porous. It is correct that the exact place from where the water is leaking may not be the place for the entry of the water as the water enters from some other place, flows between the concrete structure and flows out from the opening at some other place.
But, this is a result of poor workmanship and under usage of vibrator while laying the concrete structure,” said a city-based architect. Nominated councillors and an architect by profession, Surinder Bahga said, “When such big structures are erected, there are possibilities that some porousity is left which can be impregnated at later stage. It is not a big issue.”
