Chandigarh: After studying the security breach reports at Nabha Jail which was primarily due to shortage of staff, the Burail Jail authorities have sent a reminder to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for giving a green signal to recruit more staff for the Burail jail.
According to sources, the Model jail of Burail which houses around 700 inmates, has a staff of just 140 men who look after the
security to every next arrangement in jail. Sources added that around 50 per cent of the inmates
in Model jail are convicts while 50 per cent are the undertrials.
However, to tackle the situation, the administration of Model Jail, Burail, had sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to sanction the appointment of more staff for the jail earlier but not receiving any immediate response from the MHA, the Burail jail authorities have sent a reminder again concerning the matter.
AIG Prison S K Jain said that there is a shortage of staff in Model jail following which we have sent a reminder proposal to the MHA seeking for appointment of more regular employees for the jail. A proposal for a staff of 150 men has been sent while we have also sought for immediate recruitment of 75 regular employees.
According to sources, after 2005, there has been not much appointment of regular staff in Model jail. The staff have been recruited mostly on contract
basis. Sources said that at present a staff of around 86 men is on regular job while 55 are employed on contract basis.
Following the shortage of staff, a huge number of regular and contractual staff are also facing difficulties in maintaining the jail security system as due to this there is also an acute shortage of wardens in the jail.
According to reports, dreaded criminals have already escaped the security of Model Jail as in 2004, Jagtar Singh, alias Tara, Paramjit Singh Bheora and their accomplice Dev Singh escaped from the high security Burail Model
Jail in Chandigarh after digging a tunnel.
