Chandigarh: There is a major setback for BJP as State Election Commission has ruled out to increase number of wards at 11th hour. State Election Commissioner, Rakesh Mahta said that it is not possible at this stage to increase the number of wards.
He also said that the Election Commission has already initiated the process to conduct the elections in MC Chandigarh. The elections are likely to be conducted in the third week of December and by first week of January MC will get its new Mayor.
Mehta said, “This is no time to increase the number of wards. We have already initiated the election process. Increasing number of wards is very cumbersome and time consuming process which may take atleast three months whereas MC elections are to be conducted by the third week of December positively.”
Mehta also added that after the declaration of results, the appointment of nominated councillors is also to be completed by December end so that by the first week of January, the house gets its new Mayor.
Speculations were rife that government will increase the wards from 26 to 31. Sources said that BJP will gain if the wards are increased as at present most of the wards where BJP has its hold are falling under reserved category. On the other hand, BJP is still confident of getting the wards increased.
