Chandigarh: The MC House meet hits another low as it was one more day of verbal sparring between nominated councillors and Congress councillors during the meet on Wednesday, when after getting offended with a comment of a nominated councillor, the Congress councillors staged a walkout. However, later they were pacified by Mayor Arun Sood and other House members after which the Congress councillors relented and returned back for the House proceedings. The nominated councillors during discussion were opposing the statement given by one of the Congress councillors terming them as ‘opportunists,’ ‘use-and-throw councillors.’ Reacting to this, nominated councillor Dr Shagufta Parveen said, “During elections, you (Congress councillors) have been washing our feet to get votes and now you term us as ‘use-and-throw’ commodity.” No sooner did she issue this statement, there was an uproar and outburst amongst all the eight Congress councillors and they had heated arguments with Parveen. Congress councillors getting offended over the statement walked out of the House. The commotion occured during the discussion about the verbal duel between Subhash Chawla and Dr Amrita in the last House meet when Dr Amrita allegedly raised a hand to slap Chawla. This was the fourth time that Congress councillors have been involved in verbal duels during the House meet resulting in stalling of the House proceedings. Chawla said, “We had decided that we will not get involved in any of the untoward discussion which may lead to adjournment of the House but nominated councillor Shagufta Parveen has once again provoked us and hit us below our belts. Her statement of ‘vote manganey ke liye pair dhona’ (to wash our feet for seeking votes) is derogatory statement for Congress councillors. We highly condemn this act of the said nominated councillor.” CPCC president Pardeep Chhabra said that the nominated councillors existence came on behest of Congress and now they have shifted their stands. “It was Congress which fought for very existence of nominated councillors and now they have shifted their loyalties and have been accusing us instead. Shagufta Parveen has now become member of WAKF board because of her loyalties towards BJP,” alleged Chhabra.
