Chandigarh: In keeping with its tag of being a Smart City, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is all set to work on its plan of making smart parkings in the city. Confirming the same, MC Joint Commissioner Virender Chaudhary said, “We are in the process of making smart parkings and it will take some time to frame a new policy.” Meanwhile, the decision on what the smart parking would include will be taken in the upcoming meeting of MC officials on June 27.
In the meeting, the five-member committee constituted by the MC for examining and recommending numbers and size of advertisements boards, panels, food joints, service centres etc to be allowed to the private agencies and companies for operation and management of paid parking areas. The five-member committee include the Superintending Engineer, Chief Accounts Officer, Executive Engineer, OSD Advertisement and Law Officer.
However, in the earlier meeting that was held between Adviser to UT Administrator, Mayor, Home Secretary and MC Commissioner, various economic models for sustainable and convenient-to-the public methods of parking were discussed. It was also discussed if the advertisement rights can also be given to the contractor along with leasing out the parking places.
The method of leasing out the parking places should be in such a way that being economically viable to the contractor, it should be convenient and beneficial to the public and ear revenue for the MC also, was also discussed. The issue the issue was the deferred and the chairman directed the Mayor and MC Commissioner to carry out pilot projects at different sites, on different models for a reasonable period of time and to put a final proposal incorporating all the aspects of leasing out the parking places without advertisement rights in jurisdiction of Chandigarh MC. Thereafter, the matter will be considered again at arrive at a decision in this regard by the competent authority.
