Panchkula: Despite an impressive network of government hospitals, healthcare at affordable rates continue to evade majority of residents in Panchkula. This is largely because of severe shortage of staff at Civil Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula following which patients are in vexation.
With only 60 per cent of the sanctioned staff, Panchkula’s Civil Hospital is struggling to provide proper medical care. The lack of requisite infrastructure is major issue which has put health facilities at back burner in the city.
“We have an acute shortage of doctors, staff nurses and paramedical staff at the hospital. The quality of patient care is definitely suffering. We are managing things in a very difficult situation’’, said a senior Health Department official on request of anonymity.
At the emergency ward of the hospital, most patients can be seen tackling the situation on their own. They complain not enough care is being provided to their wards.
Parmod Kumar, a resident of Baltana whose daughter was admitted on Tuesday, told that her daughter had not received enough medical attention. “She is having high fever, and I myself took her to the doctor here for a check-up,” he said. “There was no one to assist her. Only the nursing staff in the beginning provided the bed, but no doctor visited us.”
“We have only one doctor working at the emergency. The rest of them are posted in other departments,” said an official. “There are a lot of vacancies, but they are yet to be fulfilled. The nursing staff and the doctors are less in number against the sanctioned posts.’’
During a reality check in the night hours, it was found that majority of people stranded at the centre and many were not entertained by the duty doctors following shortage of medical staff. The patients in the emergency ward were waiting for their turn to be checked by the doctors; even some cases were of seriously ill patients.
Meanwhile patients coming during the night hours at emergency were seen handling the stretchers and managing their wards themselves as there was no helper or employee assigned to help the patients coming in emergency conditions.
