Secretary, University Grants Commission Prof. Dr Jaspal S Sandhu had earlier addressed a letter to the Vice Chancellor for ‘Inclusion of NOTA- “None of the Above” option in student elections in all Universities, Colleges, Department and Institutions.
PU is including the column NOTA- “None of the Above” option in the ballot papers with effect from forthcoming student elections (2016-17), Prof Goyal informed.
This initiative by Panjab University is getting mixed responses from various party leaders in the campus. Some says that this is a positive initiative and some says it will be a drawback for parties.
Harmanjot Singh gill, Activist from ABVP marks this introduction as a positive step, says “This is very good step for involving students who are not interested in students politics. At least this will encourage them to exercise their right.”
On the same notes, nirjog mann, PUSU President says, “’Nota is a very welcome option because students don’t deserve to choose a candidate or a party as a choice of bad from the worst. Thus, it gives them all the more power to express their wishes. PUSU welcomes NOTA. May we produce fine and honest leaders for our lives tomorrow.”
However, NSUI activist Siya says, “On one hand it’s good for students but on the other it’s not good for parties because when a student is not into voting but want to exercise his right, then they have tendency to vote for best of all. But now students have option of ignoring all the parties then it is a drawback for us parties.”
Moreover Karan Randhawa, SOI campus president, says, “I don’t think students will exercise this option. As we have completed our promises. And we are hopeful students will vote gor us. But on the other hand by introducing this otion we will get to know how many students are unhappy with the current parties.”
