Chandigarh: Manoj (20) is admitted to PGI for the last one and a half years and is suffering from blood cancer. The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) which is having different facilities to treat all type of diseases, is now allegedly found mistreating its patients.
According to his uncle Sita Ram, “I am getting exhausted day-by-day as Manoj requires special care and attention due his severe condition. The government has also granted Rs 5 lakh for his treatment and medicines but most of the time that the doctor subscribes are unavailable or chemist shops refuse to give medicine and tell us to come again the next day. At last I have to buy medicines with my own money. I doubt that in these conditions Manoj will recover. Moreover, they do not even allow patient to enter ‘Rain Basera’ hall after 7 am to 7 pm”, he added.
Meanwhile, every day patients are kept out in the lawn on stretchers with no choice left with their families. As the weather condition gets colder, patients who have come to recuperate back can suffer more illness. Beside all this, there is no nurse or any hospital staff available near the patients in case any emergency arises. Once they ask to leave hospital authorities, they do not even scrutinise patients until it’s 7 pm, the time of entrance to rain basera hall.
When contacted, the Public Relations Office of PGI said, “We mostly prefer patients to come back in the evening. If we allow them to enter at day time, then beggars also come inside the hall to get roof, Rain Basera is the only restroom for patients who do not need much treatment”.
This incident is a clear sign of negligence by the hospital authorities towards its patients which raises questions on the PGI management.
