Panchkula: The demonetisation effect has also caused some variations in the Municipal Corporation tax collection as soon after the announcement of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes, there is ten times hike in property tax collection at the Panchkula MC.
After the demonetisation, the state government from November 10 allowed depositing of property tax in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes till November 11 midnight which was further extended till November 14 and now up to November 24. According to the officials, from November 10 to November 17, MC collected Rs 10.5 lakh in property tax. It is 10 times more than what the civic body got before demonetisation as they collected just Rs 1.5 lakh.
Recently MC Commissioner Lalit Siwach had announced Operation Clean up under which major defaulters were issued notices. Shalimar Mall is topping the list of the defaulters. The previous notice sent to the mall owners was for Rs 6.68 crore, while after recalculation of the area and the calculations made through the new rates, the amount has come to Rs 9.61 crore.
The civic body through a private firm had sent notices to 18 defaulters out of which 15 are yet to clear their dues and it has now been clarified that the actual amount of the tax is Rs 11.7crore which earlier was amounted to be 7 crore. However none of the big defaulters have deposited the tax even now.
