Chandigarh: Major traffic jam on the road dividing Sectors 14 and 15 left cops on duty and commuters fuming as PU left only gate number 2 open for entry and exit from the campus. Serpentine queues were seen on the approach road to PU gate number 2 from Sector 25 side as well as Sector 15 side.
The decision of Punjab University management to close down all gates except gate number two caused major traffic jams. The decision left the cops and commuters fuming.
The sultry weather gave cops tough time to the cops managing the traffic at the entry of the gate number two of PU. Serpentine queues on both sides of the road and even inside the PU gate left commuters harassed.
One of the traffic cops on duty said, “The decision of PU to close down other gates is wrong. Diverting entire rush towards single entry-exit gate has caused massive traffic jam. It is the road followed by ambulances to reach PGI and we have been busy helping ambulances wading through traffic jam.”
Similarly, commuters were also left fuming as they had to wait for long to cross the traffic signal at PU gate number 2.
Simranvir Singh, heading for PGI said, “It has been 25 minutes that we have been stranded in traffic jam. We were supposed to deliver food for our ailing family member at PGI. It is ridiculous on the part of PU to have forced closure of all gates and allow entry exit from a single gate. It has caused heavy traffic jam.”
PU on the other hand reasoned that it was done to maintain law and order. PU Security incharge Jatinder Gorver said, “We are more concerned about the security cover for PU. Students elections are most sensitive elections and managing security is no child’s play.”
