Chandigarh: During the meeting of Board of Finance, Panjab University has proposed a budget of 515 crores for the session 2017-18. The budget in the session have seen a jump of eight percent from the previous budget. The fifty percent of the budget will be utilised to pay the salaries of the university employees.
The university will generate internal revenue of Rs 374 crores leaving deficit of Rs 241 cores. The deficit will be met from the grants received by University Grants Commission and Panjab University. The board of Finance has also agreed to hike the tuition fee of various courses in of the university The traditional courses like sciences, arts and commerce will witness the largest amount of hike.
Eight to ten times hike is expected in many courses of the university. The board of Finance has also decided to ask the Punjab Government to increase the grant to Panjab University by 12 percent on yearly basis. At present the university receives a grant of Rs 20 crores from the Punjab Government. But the university has been demanding a hike of 12 per cent on the grant from the session at which the amount was fixed. According to the authorities the inflation is rising and so the grant fixed by Punjab Government has to be increased on regular basis.
The university may also bring the case in front of the Punjab and Haryana High court after the code of conduct is lifted after the announcement of election results.
