Punjab & Haryana HC rejects Ram Rahim demand.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has rejected the demand and asked to deposit the amount of fine and compensation to the CBI court. CBI court imposed a fine of Rs 30 lakh on Dera chief in two rape cases of Sadhvis and asked the Dera chief to deposit the money as FDR.Dera chief Gurmeet Singh Ram Rahim challenged the CBI’s court’s verdict of 20-year imprisonment for Sadhvis rape cases against him in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and filed a petition to restrain the fine.A plea was also filed in High Court by Sadhvis (victims) who urged to convert the 20 year imprisonment into life imprisonment on which High Court has issued notice to CBI today while admitting it.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim through his senior advocate SK Garg Narwana said that the CBI court has pronounced sentence without proper evidence and witnesses and FIR was filed after 2-3 years of delay and it was lodged on the basis of an anonymous letter, the complainant’s name was not even known.Even the CBI did not felt necessary to conduct medical tests. On all these grounds, Dera chief has demanded the dismissal of the sentence pronounced against him.
A special CBI court had convicted Ram Rahim for rape of two female disciples in 1999. CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh had pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases that date back to 2002. The court had also fined him Rs 15 lakh in each of the two cases.Ram Rahim is currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak district of Panchkula. In April 2002, an anonymous letter was written to the then Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, complaining about alleged sexual exploitation of women followers at Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa.
