Chandigarh: After tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, fungal infections, more microbial infections that cause formidable morbidity and mortality of human another new deadly infection that has become a major issue of concern is Candida auris. Prof Arunaloke Chakrabarti head of department Medical Microbiology PGIMER highlighted this fact. While sharing more information about the infection, Prof Chakrabarti said, “Right now Microbes are big challenge for human health. However, presently a new infection Candida auris a rare fungus, which can sweep through the bloodstream causing infections and death, is has become a major issue of concern.
“Right now PGI has around 150 patients who are suffering from this rare fungus. The fisrt incidence of this virus was reported at the Ganga Ram hospital Dehi. After that few doctors from PGIMER went to the hospital to get more details as from where it was originated,” shared Prof Chakrabarti. “While, after doing a profound research the PGIMER doctors then conducted a detailed study in about 27 Intensive care unit (ICU) was conducted and out of which 19 were found to be positive of having the Candida auris infection,” informed, Prof Chakrabarti. He further stated that the mortality rate of Candida auris is around 70-80 percent and right now around 150 Patients have been diagnosed and isolated who were suffering from this virus and the number is still increasing. However, right now the disease has only one antibiotic.
Meanwhile, he also highlighted that be it any infection the early and rapid diagnosis may help in optimizing the therapy. For early and rapid diagnosis, the discipline of microbiology is going through a transition. Machine and automation are replacing the conventional tests. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is another formidable challenge.
