61 killed among 140 till November 2016 were cyclists and pedestrians
Chandigarh: Chandigarh Administration may have constructed special cycle tracks for cyclists and side paths for pedestrians to move freely from vehicles rush, but the roads of City Beautiful continue to remain lethal for them. According to an official data of Chandigarh Traffic Police, in 2016 till November 30, among 140 fatal accidents, 61 pedestrians and cyclists have lost their lives.
The police data reveals that 34 were pedestrians who got killed while 27 were cyclists. Among the pedestrians, 26 were males and eight were females, whereas 25 were men cyclist and two were wome cyclists who turned victims of road mishaps in Chandigarh. Shockingly, most of the fatal accidents were reported on main roads, including Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg and some on internal stretches.
Most of the accidents were of hit-and-run, when the accused managed to flee from the spot leaving behind the victim in pools of blood. As per the police sources, during the inspection of spot of every fatal accident involving pedestrians and cyclists, the officials indicated that right of way was not given to pedestrians in most of the cases whereas in the case of cyclists, majority of them were killed at traffic lights.
Going by the black book of Chandigarh Traffic Police, 47.28 per cent of victims of fatal accidents are pedestrians and cyclists. In 2015, 47 pedestrians were killed in road mishaps while 44 and 40 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in 2014 and 2013 respectively. In October and November when the new cycle tracks were made functional, still 15 cyclists and pedestrians have lost their lives in the respective months.
Meanwhile, Eish Singhal, SSP Traffic, Chandigarh Police, said “There have been accidents which included pedestrians and cyclists. Chandigarh Traffic Police are consistently working to aware the cyclists to use the cycle tracks. Most of the accidents usually take place when the vehicle riders are either overspeeding or are drunk. We are trying to erect check posts (nakas) of over speeding and drunken driving around the city and penalise the offenders so that people drive safe and there are less numbers of accidents”.
