Chandigarh : Drinking water can be a major resource of revenue generation in future as selling of low-cost drinking water will get preference ahead of soft drinks, tea or coffee. Working on these lines, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has joined hand with iSatya Gram Food and Beverages Private Limited which runs the project to put battery-operated vehicle to service to quench the thirst of people.
On an experimental basis, seven such battery-operated (ruk-ruk) vehicles will be put in service to quench the thirst of people at seven places that see maximum footfall across the city. These are two places in Sector 17, one each at Sukhna Lake, Sector 22 market, Rock Garden, Shastri Market Sector 19 and Mohali. These provide access to drinking water at Rs 2 for 250 ml and at Rs 5 for a litre as per World Health Orgainziation (WHO) standards.
A official of the company told Daily Post that they have a target to put such 100 vehicles to service in coming days. He further said that water dispenser was fitted with display board that continuously showed TDS and temperature of water. It also displayed ingredients of quality water. If impurity is detected, the water supply automatically will stop, he says. The official of the municipal corporation said that it was catching up with the people. City’s climate, fast growing health conscious population and rapid urbanisation were some of the facts that were putting pressure onthe limited water supply but of quality water.
Each vehicle costs approximately Rs 3.50 lakh. The vehicle has all the gadgets that require for quality of water. It has also displayed prominently on both sides of the vehicle for knowledge of the customer. Residents of city may soon see more ‘Ruk-Ruk’ vehiclesquenching thirst of people on city roads.
The man who mans the system said that it has a capacity of 300 litre of quality drinking water and he sells water approximately between 200 and 250 litre per day. He has been appointed by the corporation at a salary of Rs 9,000 per month.
