Chandigarh: The art and creativity of the inmates at Burail Jail will now be open to public as the furniture and bakery items prepared by them in the jail will be sold to the public.
The items prepared by them will be sold at the shopping complex set up Model Jail Complex in Sector-51. The shopping complex along with a community centre was inaugurated by the local MP Kirron Kher in the presence of Adviser to the Administrator, Chandigarh Parimal Rai and Home Secretary, Anurag Agarwal here on Sunday.
The shopping complex and community centre will not only serve the needs of staff and family of the jail authorities but it will also serve the people of various housing societies of Sector-51. Kher said people of Sector-51 had been for long demanding that a community centre and shopping complex be set up in their sector.
A S Cheema, Inspector General of Prisons, Chandigarh said that there is also a demand for starting of ATM facility in Shopping complex. Cheema said that 76 inmates have done degree and diploma courses from IGNOU and other universities and their fee is paid by the department.
