Chandigarh: Punjab State Power Corporation had been in overdrive mode to cut electricity supply of defaulters who failed to deposit electricity bills across the state. Be it politicians, MCs, institutions and government departments, wrath of PSPCL had been felt throughout Punjab.
In last two weeks, PSPCL had cut the electricity supply at Faridkot and Ludhiana jail
Even the high security jails in which hardcore gangsters had been lodged have not remained immune to PSPCL disconnection drive which is making headlines every day.
On February 23, Faridkot modern jail remained without electricity for some hours as power supply was disconnected for non-payment of dues of up to Rs 1.45 crore. The supply was restored after Faridkot Deputy Commissioner intervened into the matter.
PSPCL snapped the power connection of Ludhiana Central jail on March 7, due to non-payment of electricity bill of approximately Rs 1 crore. Around 3,000 inmates are lodged in Central Jail, Borstal Jail and Women Jail in Ludhiana.
Sensing the gravity of the issue, ADGP (Prisons) Rohit Choudhary wrote a letter to PSPCL asking them to restrain from disconnecting the power supply to jails in the state.
Choudhary said, “It is the duty of PSPCL to get dues from defaulters but we have informed them that all the dues of jails across the state will be cleared once the budget is allocated after the formation of government.”
