Chandigarh: Last-minute campaigning, public meetings, inviting the students to vote through social media and convincing the hostlers and flag march by police personnel were the highlights of the day as the Panjab University is all set for the student union polls on September 7.
Voting will be held at 148 polling booths through secret ballot boxes, which have already reached the departments. But the ballot papers will be sent to the departments on Wednesday morning.
Students have been instructed to assemble at their respective polling booths at 9.30 am after which teachers will take their attendance.
Voting will start at 9.45 am and no student will be allowed to enter his/her respective department after 10.15 am. The counting will be done at gymnasium hall at 2 pm and results are expected to be declared around 4 pm.
DSW Goyal informed that students need to bring their identity cards along. The chairperson of each department will act as the chief polling officer who will be the overall incharge of the counting for that particular block and the final authority for determining the validity of the polled votes. As many as 26 returning officers have been appointed for 26 different blocks.
University Chief Security Officer, Jatinder Grover said, “The entry of students from Panjab University(PU) Gate No 1 (PGI) will remain open from 8.00 am to 10.00 am and after that it will be closed till 4.00 pm.”
Result of DR(Department Representative) will be displayed in the concerned Departments by 12 noon. Out of 123, 57 DRs have already been elected as unopposed and in those departments, only office bearers elections will be held. And Executive Election for DR are set to be held on September 14 in the Auditorium of Physics Department where only Elected Departmental Representatives and Office Bearers will be allowed.
With University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) (2514), University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS)(1174), Department of Laws (1187) and UICET (774) having the maximum voter share, these departments will be having maximum number of polling booths.
UIET is set to have 24 booths, UILS to have 10, 6 in LAWS and 9 in UICET.
Of the total 15,305 voters, UIET has 2,514 as compared to 1,817 last year. There is increase of 617 voters in this department.
The Students’ Organisation of India (SOI) has fielded Piyush Anand as its presidential candidate. Anand has done a five-year integrated course at UIET and now is a student of Department of Urdu.
Siya Minocha of NSUI is a presidential candidate from UILS which has 1,174 voters, which is the third largest vote bank at Panjab University. This year there is an increase of 158 voters at the UILS department.
Last year, there were 1,016 voters. Siya, who is a law graduate from the department, is currently in her first year of LLM. “I have been canvassing long enough and the students have seen my work. I’m very confident of becoming the first woman president of PU,” she said.
