Chandigarh – A day after a video of a stepmother assaulting a 5-year old girl went viral on social media and a complaint being lodged to the Child Welfare Committee; Chandigarh Police on Monday registered a First Information Řeport (FIR) in the matter. The accused stepmother identified as Jaspreet Kaur was caught stuffing the 5-year-old girl in a sack and also slapping the child while her legis in a cast; in a series of mobile videos. The child in the video was seen shouting in pain and crying badly.Confirming about the development in the case, Deputy Supérintendent of Police (DSP East) Satish Kumar told that a case has been registered against the stepmother. “We have registered a case against Jaspreet Kaur for assaulting a minor under relevant sections. Further probe has been initiated in the matter,’ he added. The brutality came to light after the elderson of Manmohan Singh, a resident of Sector 29, showed the videos he had recorded on his phone over a span of few weeks to him last month that prompted the father to lodge a complaint to the police. Jaspreet Kaur is also accused of breaking the leg of the girl by twisting it a few months back.Also in a series of three videos, the 5-year-old can be seen manhandled to the hands of her stepmother. Among one of the videos, the child with her right leg being fractured can be seen crying after the accused beats her mercilessly. However till the filing of the report, no arrest was made in the case. Police told that earlier when complainant’s son used to tell the same to him; he never believed. But after he was shown the videos, he was completely shocked. The father of the 5-year-old girl has also lodged a complaint to the Child Welfare Committee, fearing Jaspreet, a resident of Sector 27, could kill his daughter. Devinder Singh, station house officer, Industrial Area Police Station, said they have received a complaint few days back after which an investigation was initiated and statements were recorded. A case was registered on Monday under section 75 of the Juveniles justice act (Punishment for cruelty to child) and Section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Meanwhile police sources told that while the complaint was lodged few days back, a FIR was registered late as an investigation in the matter was underway and officials were establishing the authenticity of the videos. Manmohan who had shifted to the city from Karnataka, around seven months back, had married Jaspreet in 2016 after the death of his first wife. It is also the second marriage of Jaspreet after her husband had died in a road accident. Jaspreet has also a daughter from her first husband.
