Student outfits participating in Punjab University student election are least bothered about sports and facilities provided to athletes. The debacle in Rio Olympics has not inspired even a single organisation to include sports as major issue and raise demand for the same.
“They seldom raise the issue of sports during election or after it” said Bhupinder Singh, Football coach in PU. He added that we have to understand that to develop sports we have to start from schools and universities.”We don’t have the adequate facilities. They are constructing new hockey ground but for last four years it is in the process of construction. They should take development of sports as major agenda” he urged. When contacted dignitaries of major organisation said that they knew about the problems but there are other major problems which have to be met before. “We haven’t thought about sports yet but as you have brought the topic to notice we will include it” said Kanwar, Campus President Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad. National Student Union of India who talks about women empowerment and getting more funds has left sports somewhere in the last even knowing that 75 percent athletes from university are women. Student Organisation of India (SOI) was not willing to disclose their demand as they are still preparing the manifesto.
“We are aware of the current problems which sportsperson are facing. We will surely raise their problems,” said Hardik vice president PUSU. But on the ground they haven’t raised the problem of hockey ground (astro turf), football from last many years.
