Chandigarh: Only the UT Police know as to what measures it contemplate to handle the PU bandh called for by students on Tuesday to protest against the fee hike by Panjab University. Students have stood up together for one another in huge numbers. All parties will gather their student strength and try to force closure of the university gates.
In previous protests, clothes of protesting girls were torn and male students were detained by the police. Keeping previous instances, there is a likelihood that students will be treated with a firm hand again and a clash is feared between the police and students. Roads adjoining Panjab University might face traffic breakdowns. The police till now have used water cannons and lathi charge against the protesting students. Girls protesting against the fee hike had alleged that Chandigarh Police officials mishandled the situation and maltreated them on Wednesday. Lakhbir Singh, SHO of Sector 11 police station, said, “Nothing can be disclosed as to what precautions we will take to maintain law and order. However, all necessary steps will be taken.”
“I request the students to actively participate in the protest, the protest will benefit us and the future students of the university,” said SOI member Prabh from French Department. SFS leader Daman said,”We will gather in front of the V-C’s office and proceed towards the gate.” The non-teaching staff are with the students.
On Saturday evening, an all-party meeting was called to form a united front against the fee hike and other related issues.
The organisations, namely SOI, NSUI, ASA, AISA, PSU (Lalkaar), PUSU, PUSU (for students), PUSU (evening) and SFS, attended the meeting. They named their front as “Joint Students’ Action Committee Against Fee Hike”. The forum resolved to continue their struggle against the Central and Punjab governments and the PU authorities. The demands included total rollback of the fee hike, stop detaining students on the basis of attendance, stop decreasing the seats of ongoing courses in the university, a ban on the entry of the police into the campus, complete teaching faculty and making contractual workers permanent ones.
