Chandigarh: The anti-auto theft squad of crime branch busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters. The police arrested three members of the gang and recovered 14 vehicles including three two-wheelers worth Rs 75 lakh from their possession.
The accused have been identified as Subham Gautam (20), Vineet Gautam (23), both brothers, residents of Mohali and Wazid (24), a resident of Saharanpur, UP who is a scrap dealer. The brother of Wazid, Sajid who is also involved in the gang is absconding.
SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said, “The Anti-Auto Theft Squad of Crime Branch developed secret information that two notorious inter-state vehicle lifters namely Subham Gautam and Vineet Gautam were frequently involved in vehicle lifting in the area of UT/Chandigarh and they had stolen a number of Bolero, Verna and other four-wheelers/two-wheeler from the jurisdiction of different police stations of Chandigarh.
The teams laid nakas separately at Naya Gaon turn and another near Bus Stand, Sector 17, Chandigarh and apprehended accused Subham Gautam while he was coming on a motorcycle having fake registration CH01-AX-9848, on Pulsar. The another team which laid a naka near Bus Stand, Sector-17 also succeeded in apprehending accused Vineet Gautam along with his accomplice Wazid with stolen vehicle white Verna (CH04-J-3700).
During the preliminary interrogation, both the accused confessed to have stolen about 40 four-wheeler vehicles of different makes, especially Bolero and Verna from different places of UT/Chandigarh.
During further interrogation, they disclosed that out of 40 stolen vehicles, they have disposed-off 20 four-wheelers to the scrap dealers namely Wazid and his brother Sazid.

Earlier, they were arrested by the Panchkula Police in 2014. All the above accused are having past criminal record and were found involved more than three dozen cases of vehicle thefts. They were bailed out from the Ambala Jail in May-2016.
