Chandigarh:After appointing traffic marshals for supervising traffic check posts, the Chandigarh Police are now considering to appoint school marshals who will be made to perform duties outside schools.
The Chandigarh Traffic Police introduced the concept of traffic marshals in City Beautiful in 2004 in order to improve its interface with the citizens. Under the scheme, citizen volunteers are invited to participate as marshals in the enforcement drives of the traffic police. A marshal performs the task of answering any queries posed by traffic offenders who are being challaned in the field for traffic offences.
Meanwhile, finding the traffic marshal scheme a success, the police now are thinking to keep school marshals aiming at better ambience outside schools.
Tajender Singh Luthra, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), UT, said, “Since there are more than 500 schools in Chandigarh and the schools outnumber the figure of PCR cops, we will consider appointing and deputing school marshals like traffic marshals.”“The school marshals could be the parents of schoolchildren or senior students who are willing to serve as volunteers for the safety of school students as they leave after the school gets over,” added the IGP. The officer said that the matter could be taken into consideration as there had been instances when some miscreants had been found outside schools offending law where security of schoolchildren after the school hours was a major cause of concern.
