Chandigarh :Reporting a spurt in number of fatalities in road accidents, the Chandigarh Traffic Police have added five new light points or roundabouts in the accident- prone area list.
As per previous surveys of UT Police, there were 10 accident-prone areas, however, with addition of five new accident-prone areas, the city has now 15 accident-prone areas.
According to data of Road and Accident Analysis Cell of Chandigarh Police, 25 people lost their lives at accident-prone areas whereas 57 persons were also injured. In 2015, 15 people had lost their lives in the accident-prone areas.
Meanwhile, in 2016, 144 people lost their lives in fatal accidents in Chandigarh, in 2015, 124 were fatal deaths and 292 were non-fatal.
Going by a recent fatal accident that took place at accident-prone areas, in June 2016, a 45-year-old woman, occupant of a car, was killed after the car she was driving was hit by another car near roundabout of Sectors 46/47-48/49. In October, a 20-year-old CA aspirant was killed after he was crushed by a tractor-trolley near the Airport Light point.
Most of the accidents were reported from Madhya Marg, Transport Area traffic light point, the Railway Station traffic light point and the Housing Board traffic light point, PGI/PU crossing, airport light point and Dakshin Marg.
