Trying to combat crime in a smarter way, Chandigarh Police will install 4500 more CCTV cameras throughout city under ‘Nigehbaan’ project.“We have a target of installing 12,200 cameras under ‘Nigehbaan’ project. We have already installed 7,700 cameras in city and the remaining 4500 will be installed very soon,” said Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP, Chandigarh Police.
Under project ‘Nigehbaan’, Station House Officers (SHOs) have been asked to identify sensitive points in their areas where CCTV cameras need to be installed. Traders associations, social organisations and individuals have also been encouraged to install CCTV cameras.SSP said that ‘Nigehbaan’ is a dream project of IGP, TS Luthra who has decided to get CCTV cameras installed at maximum locations in city to deter criminals. City SHOs have identified spots where CCTV cameras are needed to be installed.SSP added that bringing city under CCTV surveillance will help the police in detecting crime and identifying criminals.
In case of any crime or mishap, UT police can procure the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at nearest point. According to police, cameras will help in keeping a check on snatching incidents and hit-and-run incidents.The project ‘Nigehbaan’ is in addition to long-pending proposal of installing 660 CCTV cameras by Chandigarh Police across the city.Cases cracked through CCTV footageGang of con women held – Two con women allegedly stole away gold rings worth Rs 1 lakh, replacing it with artificial rings at Sham jewelers. The incident was recorded in CCTV footage of jewellery showroom.

Scrutiny of 18 CCTV cameras installed under ‘Nigehbaan’ scheme assisted police to crack burglary within two weeks. Chandigarh Police have arrested four persons including juvenile and recovered Rs 10.50 lakh cash and other items worth Rs 70,000-80,000 from accused possession.Getting vital clues from CCTV footage, Chandigarh Police managed to arrest seven youths including four juveniles for allegedly murdering a 19 year- old at market of Sector 25.
