Chandigarh: There will be no power cables crossing overhead in Chandigarh as the city will soon get underground power cables under smart grid system. This was stated by Kirron Kher, Member Parliament from city while addressing the media persons at UT guest house on Saturday. She said that she is taking this project on priority basis and has given strict instructions to the UT Administration to implement the project without any if’s and buts. Kher said, “I have made it clear to the UT Administration for underground cabling of the overhead power cables on priority basis.
UT has conducted the survey of 850 kilometers of total overhead waires to be made underground. First we will implement the project from one sector on pilot basis and after assessing the shortcomings, the project will be implemented in entire city. We may start it from Sector 37 or 39 first.” She also added that she have been regularly getting complaints of power problems in city especially in summers. In many sectors there are daily power cuts. “I took up this issue and Union Minister of Power Piyush Goyal who has promised that Transformer capacity in Sectors like 17, 18 and 34 will be increased to avoid local faults. He has sought the status report from the Chandigarh Administration and requested administration to augment capacity. Goyal has also tweeted this.”
While counting the other tasks Kher said that decongestion of Tribune Chowk is also on priority list of her’s. She said, “You all are aware that within 24 hours of my letter written to Union Minster of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, it was decided that either a flyover on an underpass will be constructed at Tribune Chowk to ease out the problem of traffic congestion. Gadkari approved it and announce it at International airport while going to Himachal Pradesh.” She said that she has also arranged financial assistance amounting to Rs 21.62 crore from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the medical treatment of the constituency belonging to low strata of life.
